The Gratitude Journal - Day 2

Before you read this you might want to click here to learn more about idea behind the Gratitude Journal.

As I was falling asleep last night I consciously tried to think of the things I wrote down in my gratitude journal yesterday. Of course, it being Sunday night, my thoughts began to drift to the Monday ahead and to all the things that cluttered my schedule. One might describe these thoughts as losing focus. Interestingly, after this happened a couple of times I realized that it would take a while before I even knew that I had gone off track.

Now this isn`t a bad thing at all. Some of the best Flow that we can get is when we`re lost in thought. The goal of the Gratitude Journal experiment is to see if it`s possible to change those underlying, subconscious thoughts from negative to positive. While you can`t force yourself to be happy at any given moment, you can increase the probability of happiness-producing thoughts through conscious practice. Think of the Gratitude Journal as a way to rewire your circuits so that your current of thoughts starts running in a positive direction.

With that, here`s my list for tonight:

1. My wife - thanks for giving me the idea to start a Gratitude Journal. I love lifestyle experiments and it gives me a chance to develop some good content for this blog.

2. My winter tires - Thank you Toyo for getting me home in the wintry weather tonight. Sometimes we take consumer products for granted but take a moment and think of all the people involved in getting something as simple as a winter tire onto your car. Turns out that the invisible hand of the market is made up of a bunch of hands (and heads) hard at work.

3. Speaking of the weather let`s hear it for the snowstorm that we had today - a majority of people in the world probably never get to see snow at all, while we in Canada to have it on what seems like a daily basis. Up here, complaining about the long, cold winter is a national pastime. Heck the weather channel even went so far as put a headline on the screen today that the winter storm was attacking. Like precipitation has evil intentions! For all the pessimism I like to think that winter should be appreciated in its own right. Sometimes there`s nothing better heading out on a cold, crisp day when the snow is gently falling.

4. My wife`s new laptop - An HP Pavilion tx1000. Its a pretty cool little computer (its screen can swivels and can turn over turning the computer into a slate). The reason that I like it is much simpler than that; it was in the bedroom so I chose to write this entry directly from bed. I wonder if going to sleep immediately after posting this will make a difference?

5. The friendly staff at the gym - they always ask how my workout went and helped me get a fresh towel today. I know its their job, but I appreciate good customer service. It shows that they care.

Till tomorrow…
